Judges
Range has edges
A judge asked for a register outside their range does better to decline than to imitate it, because an imitated register reads as exactly that.
Guides on Judges: Boundaries belong to the judge, The case against the price list, What the skill in judging actually is
Ask a judge who does warm, honest reads to deliver hard SPH and you will usually get a decline, not an attempt. That is not the judge being unhelpful - it is the judge knowing what an imitated register sounds like, because they have heard other people's imitations and recognised the tell.
What "faking it" actually produces
A register is a performance sustained convincingly across a whole clip, and sustaining one takes practice in that specific register, not just general performing skill. Most judges specialise in one or two registers for exactly this reason - range has edges, and a judge who has never worked the degrading end of the spectrum cannot borrow the timing and vocabulary that make it land from a judge who has.
The result of forcing it is a clip that hits the right words without the right rhythm. Buyers notice this more than judges sometimes expect: a worship line delivered by someone whose real register is clinical reads as stilted, and a blunt read attempted by someone whose real register is reassurance reads as performative in the bad sense - trying, visibly, rather than simply being.
Why declining is the better outcome
A decline costs a buyer a few minutes and a rewritten request to a different judge. A bad imitation costs money for a clip that does not do what it was asked to do, and it costs the judge a review that reflects badly on work outside their actual craft. Forced performance costs the performer too: a meta-analysis of 95 studies by Hülsheger and Schewe (2011) found surface acting - displaying emotions not felt - substantially related to impaired well-being, while deep acting was positively related to customer satisfaction. Judges decline requests for a range of reasons, and a register outside their range is one of the cleaner ones - it is not a boundary being enforced, just an honest read of where the work would fall short.
This is a different failure mode from the one an automated scoring system has, since a model applies the same method regardless of what tone was requested rather than attempting and missing a performance. A person either has the register or does not, and the honest ones say which before taking the booking - the same way an AI model's stated confidence is an honest signal about its own limits rather than a guess dressed up as certainty.
What this means for a buyer
If a judge declines and mentions the register is not something they do, that is worth taking at face value rather than reading as a soft no about the material itself. A soft no reads differently from a plain decline, and a stated range limit is closer to the plain kind. The fix is simple: look for a judge whose listed registers already include the one you want, rather than asking a good judge in one register to stretch into another. Rate Cock lists judges by the registers they actually offer for exactly this reason - the range is stated up front so you are not the one discovering the mismatch mid-clip.
Range honesty is also why a request with a clear stated limit still needs to be sent to someone who can deliver the tone in the first place; a limit narrows a register a judge already performs, it does not create a new one, any more than a proper measurement substitutes for a register a person simply does not do.
